information@operationmeraki.orgAbout ReFocus
The story belongs to the veteran.
ReFocus is a structured, cohort-based creative wellness program for all veterans and eligible family members in Central Ohio. Using photography, narrative writing, and guided creative expression as therapeutic modalities, ReFocus helps veterans process their service, rebuild civilian identity, and share their story with dignity and power.
Free for veterans and eligible family members. No referral, and no experience required.

How we show up
Three pillars of the ReFocus experience.
Witness
Every veteran in the ReFocus Studio has someone who truly sees their work and their story — without judgment, comparison, or editing.
Clarity
Creative work — a photograph, a sentence, a chosen image — gives veterans a way to see their own experience with new eyes and find meaning in what they lived.
Voice
Veterans reclaim the right to tell their own story, in their own words and images, on their own timeline. The story belongs to the veteran, full stop.
What we do
How ReFocus works.
Visual storytelling
Photography workshops
Veterans pick up a camera or a phone and begin framing their story. No artistic experience required — just something true you want to say.
Written voice
Narrative writing sessions
Guided prompts help veterans find language for experiences that often resist words. One true sentence at a time.
Structured growth
12-week cohort cycle
Rotating cohorts move through three phases — Frame, Develop, and Share — each designed to deepen the work at the veteran’s own pace.
Peer accountability
Story buddy system
Every veteran is paired with a Story Buddy for between-session creative accountability, encouragement, and honest connection.
Community impact
Community exhibitions
Veterans may contribute to a ReFocus exhibit or publication — always voluntary, always consent-based, always veteran-directed.
Veteran-led
The ReFocus Studio
Not a classroom or a gallery, but a mission space. Veterans learn to see, to tell, and to share in a community that refuses to let any voice go invisible.
“When a veteran picks up a camera, something shifts. They stop trying to explain the experience in someone else’s language and start telling it in their own.”
Michael Thomas · Founder & Executive Director
Studio culture
What the ReFocus Studio stands on.
The story belongs to the veteran
Nothing created in ReFocus is shared publicly without explicit written consent. Every image and every word belongs to the veteran who made it.
No fixing — witnessing only
We do not critique, correct, or redirect each other’s creative choices. We witness the work and respond to what we see.
Creative courage over quality
The most powerful image in the room is often the truest one. We celebrate making something real, not technical perfection.
Leave rank at the door
Artistic skill level, military rank, civilian status — none of it matters here. Everyone is a creator. Every story carries equal weight.
We tell our stories together
When one veteran shares an image or a sentence in this room, every veteran in the room is a little less invisible.
